CfD was funded through a Strategic Grants Agreement (SGA) for 5 years, which was a jointly negotiated partnership agreement between DFID and CfD.
SGAs aimed to contribute to developing a stronger, better-informed and more effective UK community for international development, able to contribute to the internationally agreed Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) through the following key objectives:
- raise awareness in the UK of international development issues and new approaches to development, and ways in which different groups can make a contribution to poverty reduction;
- help develop an understanding of the partner’s particular strengths in making a contribution to poverty reduction;
- enable an effective dialogue between DFID and the partner on key issues;
- build the partner’s ability to plan and deliver effective activities in areas where they have particular strengths.
Clearly, the type of activities carried out to meet the objectives differed from one partner to another, but was expected to work towards achieving the overarching aim.
Other organisations that have been supported under the SGA programme were:
-
British Medical Association
-
Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy
-
Co-operative Movement UK
-
Groundwork Trust UK
-
Trades Union Congress
-
UK Local Government Alliance for International Development
